Students at Stark County High School independently
organized a “wear pink” day last Friday. The pink
shirts and ribbons signified the students support for staff, family
and others being treated for and recovering from breast cancer.
Development land deed returns to City of
Toulon
By Amy Beaver
The City of Toulon will be receiving
the deed back from Premier Development Company for the land located
south of the Stark County High School. Premier Development Company
purchased the land from the city for $24,000 back in September
of 2006 in order to develop new housing.
The city installed water and sewer
lines throughout the property. Premier Development was not able
to receive financing for the development and the city placed a
mechanics lien on the property. Premier sent a mutual release
agreement to the city to void all contract and claims and to return
the deed to the city. Once the city receives the deed document,
they will dismiss the lawsuit filled against Premier. The council
approved a resolution deeding the TIF property back to the city.

NIMS Training requirement
for County accreditation
Stark County ESDA Coordinator,
Fred Sams, has released the following important information on
county requirements for emergency accreditation. In order for
Stark County to become accredited by the Illinois Emergency Management
Agency there are many requirements that need to be met. One of
the requirements is that all individuals in emergency response
need training in National Incident Management System (NIMS). Those
that need the training are personnel either paid or volunteer
and include the following: law enforcement, firemen, emergency
medical, public works, mayors, and county board chairperson.
Training level for most is two basic courses:
ICS-100 and IS-700. Leaders of the respective areas also need
to take ICS-200. To help individuals meet these requirements,
two nights (Thursday, May 22 and Tuesday, May 27) have been scheduled
in the computer lab at Stark County High School beginning at 6
p.m. Assistance will be provided and everyone that attends should
complete their requirements in one or two sessions. All training
is to be completed by July 1 in order for our application to be
submitted and meet the August deadline.
This is very important. Please do not let
this opportunity pass by. One reason accreditation is so important
is that it will allow the county and other jurisdictions eligible
to apply for certain grants that are not available to us at this
time. Call 286-5302 or 286-2163 to register
Ambitious meeting for Wyoming Chamber
Last Wednesday evening, May 7,the Wyoming
Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting at the Rock Island
Trail Depot. A great many topics were on the schedule and numerous
decisions were to be made.
Members were reminded that the Chamber is
of, by and for the business community.
The previous meeting minutes and treasurer
report were accepted as presented.
Two worthwhile causes were discussed and it
was decided to aid in both endeavors.
1) The first is the annual fireworks display
ran by Mr. Dave Bickett. Mr. Bickett is asking for donations to
help fund this excellent event. The chamber is asking for donations
and will institute a mailing program to further help.
2) The second worthwhile project is some financial
aid to the Wyoming Public Library’s summer reading program.
This successful program has seen growth to approximately 70 children,
which is very good news. The bad news is that it has also out
grown its financial ability. Again the chamber is asking for donations
and will also institute a mailing program.
The chamber encourages any citizen to contact
any chamber member or simply drop off donations at The Pin Cushion,
Morrissey’s Refrigeration & Appliance, or any Chamber
business.
Another new membership was accepted. Rob Stachniak
of Rob’s Place became a new member. The Chamber remains
active in acquiring new members. Congrats to Rob.
The membership approved being the sponsor
of the upcoming Farmers Market to be held each Thursday during
the harvest season. Lorie Hartz will chair this event. The day
and times will be the same as last year. The weekly event will
be held downtown near the intersection of Rte 17 and Rte 91.
Also approved was a new sound system for the
downtown area. This will greatly aid in events held downtown.
A generous member contributed a large portion of this expense.
On Saturday, May 17, volunteers are needed
to plant flower in the flowerpots downtown. Simply show up around
1 p.m. and help in this beautification project.
It was decided to go forth with the landscaping
of the new signs of ‘Welcome to Wyoming’.
A great deal of discussion was made regarding
the upcoming July 19 Annual Corn Boil event. This is one of the
major undertakings of the Chamber and as such requires a great
deal of planning and coordinating. Andy and Marsh Dwyer are chairing
this event with a great deal of support from many. This year promises
to be another great event. In addition to the usual band, an enjoyable
warm up act of Rob Stachniak’s barbershop quartet will perform.
A new expeditious method is being developed to help the food lines
and improve the service.
The meeting finally adjourned and the next
meeting will be held on June 4 at the annual Chamber of Commerce
family picnic in Thomas Park
