Wyoming – This Saturday and Sunday (May 4th & 5th) is the 5th Annual Mushroom Festival/Auction and Outdoor Show in Thomas Park at Wyoming, IL. This annual event promises to be the best ever with many activities and vendors of all kinds. The traditional Mushroom Festival has expanded to two (2) days this year to offer more variety. With the long winter and wet spring, this is an ideal time to get out and enjoy.
Saturday is largely dedicated to our traditional Mushroom Festival and the Fred Howard Mushroom Auction. New this year is the Wyoming Lions Club hosting a biscuits and gravy breakfast beginning at 9 a.m. Of course the famous mushroom soup will again be featured along with many food vendors offering a big variety of cuisine. Other exhibitors offer a variety of things that you will find interesting and irresistible. The mushroom event draws people from throughout the Midwest from mushroom sellers and mushroom buyers to just folks that like to see the auction. The auction begins at 2 p.m. with registration beginning at 11 a.m. This day is always enjoyable as proven by its continuation and growth.

Senator Kirk Staff to Host Mobile Office Hours in Stark County

A member of U.S. Senator Mark Kirk’s (R-Ill.) staff will be available to meet with constituents on May 8th in Woodford, Marshall, and Stark Counties.  Staff will be available to provide assistance regarding federal issues on Wednesday, May 8 at the following places and times.

Wyoming Council article clarification on donation to Fall Festival

 Wyoming City Alderman Dan Hardman requested that a clarification be made regarding one of the items in the article regarding the April Wyoming City Council meeting.  In the article, it was stated that Rich St. John reported on the progress of the Morel Mushroom festival to be held the first weekend in May and asked the city to consider making a donation to the event as they do for the Fall Festival.  
Alderman Hardman clarified that the council has not made a monetary donation to the Wyoming stop of the Fall Festival in the past.  The city has assisted at Thomas Park by providing barricades, extra patrols and assistance with the garbage.  Peggy Gray, chairperson for the Wyoming stop has never requested a donation from the city.  She in fact holds

A historic flood

The rain came Wednesday afternoon and didn’t stop until hundreds of homes across Stark County were damaged, roads flooded, but thankfully, no lives lost.
To put into prospective the amount of rain Stark County received last Wednesday and Thursday, Tim Colgan of Wyoming crunched some numbers.
“One inch of rain on an acre is 28,000 gallons. There’s 640 acres per sq. mile, so 18 million gallons per sq mile times 288 sq. miles in Stark County. Now times by 5 for the amount of rain we received in inches and you get 26 billion gallons of water!!! At 8 lbs. per gallon, 208 billion lbs. of water running through the county.”
I started on my journey surveying the roads around 4 a.m. At that point, the roads that normally flood, like Duncan Road and 1050 E were still open. Two hours later that wasn’t the case.
The Wyoming Fire Department began responding to smoke investigation calls around 4 a.m. as well. They ended up pulling electrical service to dozens of homes throughout the day. Toulon, Bradford and LaFayette did likewise as water levels rose to meet electrical service panels in basements. Over 60 homes voluntarily had power disconnected by noon on Thursday.

Principal hired for high school, junior high

The Stark County Board of Education has employed Mr. William Lamb as the new Stark County Junior High and High School principal.  Lamb has served as principal at Deer Creek Mackinaw High School since 2003.  Prior to that time he served as Dean of Students in East Peoria and as a mathematics teacher in both East Peoria and Franklin Park, Illinois.  Lamb received his bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University in 1985 and his master’s degree in Educational Administration from Illinois State University in 1997.
Stark County superintendent Jerry Klooster said that with a strong background in curriculum development, Mr. Lamb hopes to utilize his professional experience through the implementation of progressive, data-driven programs for students in the district.  Mr. Lamb has worked recently with his current district on Common Core curriculum design, RTI training, and integration of the Danielson Frameworks. 
Lamb and his wife hope to relocate from their Peoria home to Stark County as soon as is practicably possible.
