Are you still “Shopping Stark County?”It’s that time again to remind you to Shop Stark County. As we are now well into spring, does your shopping habit change? Shopping locally aids everyone and we should all try to comply. Remember it only takes an average of everyone spending only $7 per week of monies (in county) you may spending outside the county. Where the (expletive) are they! Wyoming residents have endured the ugliness, mud, and other problems associated with the new water project. They understood the situation and realized that with improvements comes some duration of inconvenience. However, the natives are getting restless and with good reason. Denton Gunter Underground left last winter with the promise that they would be back when good weather returned. The weather has been good for at least the last three weeks and still no sign of work. The Wyoming City Council has demanded that the engineer advise them to return immediately. (Hopefully by the time you read this they will have returned). Wyoming joining the 21st century? It appears possible, with some preliminary inquiries, that the city may install new state-of-the-art water meters to all water customers. Replacing the century old water system is certainly a major step of progress, but along with that old system came a host of water meter problems. The city has been looking at a resolution for some time. You may recall that this project was funded with some city funds, with the bulk being via a loan and a grant. The project bids came in under the proposed amount needed. The law dictates the spending in that order, the city, the loan and then the grant. Any excess funds will be deducted from the grant. The city funds along with the loan are spent first, so therein lies the reason for water charge increases. The city engineering firm made some inquiries about funding new water meters with the excess funds of the grant money. Dave Wright, representing Christopher Burke Engineering, based on inquiries, says it appears to be within the guidelines. The possible winner is you, the resident. These meters do everything, well maybe not your laundry, but they offer remote readings, water proof, automated uploads for billing and minute readings. Water leaks can be detected early and accurately and as to when they happened; and so on. I spoke with Ray and Dorothy Morrissey the other night and they were in Florida for two months this winter. The water was shut off before they left, but they got an estimated bill anyway. This should be a thing of the past. In this writer’s opinion, we should thank the foresight of your city council and keep our fingers crossed. Are you ready! The 2nd Annual Morel Mushroom Festival is just days away. This event will be held on May 1 at Thomas Park in Wyoming. Whether you are a mushroom eater, a hunter, or both, this is the focal point of the annual spring mushroom season. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. and has a host of activities for the entire family. This includes games, a hayrack ride, food, a Liars’ contest and on and on. The main event of auctioning mushrooms begins at 1 p.m. and goes until all the mushrooms are sold. This is a joint venture of Stark County Tourism Committee in conjunction with the Wyoming Area Chamber of Commerce. Both organizations support many community and county functions. This is the only fundraiser for the Tourism Committee. They jointly promised good weather; so be there! |
