I counted about 300 area farmers at the annual Rumbold & Kuhn Golf Day and Dinner Monday at Arrowhead Country Club on the Chillicothe blacktop. Mike Rumbold served as master of ceremonies on behalf of the family members who operate the sprawling grain merchandising and farming business. Mike predicted record bean yields locally. “There are a lot of pods out there,” he observed. A guest analyst, whose name I didn’t fully catch, predicted a national average corn yield of 163 bushels per acre, which would also be a record. The analyst said that we were looking forward to corn prices “north of $4” a bushel and “we’re at price levels that justify some selling of 2011 crop.” In support of that, he noted that “we have the capacity to out-produce increased demand (for corn and beans).”

County Watch—Tractors; Ted; “Greek Gentleman”; Your Bar; Stark County

Antique tractors will fill up the Stark County Jr. Fairgrounds in Wyoming this Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. each day, for the 5th Annual Antique Tractor and Equipment Show (previously held at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe). The free exhibition may become a regular event in Stark County. We encourage you to pay a visit. Ted Webster of West Jersey is in the hospital in Peoria, according to Toulon Lions Club secretary Rev. Wayne McLeod. Ted has been in the Intensive Care Unit on a ventilator, where at last word they are slowly trying to get him off the ventilator and breathing on his own. Ted is a very sick man and can use your prayers and encouragement. Ted has been a mainstay of the Toulon Lions for years, serving as president multiple times and in all other offices. Send card or notes to: Ted Webster, 2516 Township Road 100 N, Toulon, IL 61483.

U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock of Peoria will hold a Town Hall meeting this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Connie’s Country Kitchen in Toulon. This will be a great opportunity for residents to question the congressman about any issues of importance to you. Aaron also walked in the Old Settlers Association parade on Saturday. Aaron is undoubtedly the most publicized freshman congressman in recent memory. Maybe it is because he is also the youngest member of the US House, still in his 20s, I believe. Toulon native Lacey Krans, daughter of Randy and Karen Krans, has been climbing the rungs of television news rapidly. The (soon to be) 30-year-old has gone from WMBD in Peoria to Champaign to Milwaukee and now she has landed a job with Channel 5 in Chicago, the nation’s third largest television market.

Mark Duncan of West Jersey used the Heimlich maneuver this past Thursday to save the life of Denise Cook of Kewanee. A mailman and cattleman, Duncan was on his mail route and had just dropped off mail at the D&D Lake Street Tap in Kewanee. As he was leaving, he heard a thumping and turned to see owner Denise Cook pounding her fist on the bar and indicating that she couldn’t breathe. Mark immediately applied the Heimlich maneuver, which opened her breathing passage way. There was no food involved, but something inside blocked her air passage. According to reports in other papers, Mark learned his life-saving technique as a Junior Football League coach in Stark County.

I talked this past week with David Ulm, who is spearheading the School Wind Consortium for the Carpentersville School District in Kane County in suburban Chicagoland. David said that the latest version of the project will be a taxable organization, which should mean that the project will pay property taxes to Stark County local governments on the 13 towers to be constructed in the $50 million project. Based on the conversation, I sense the project is very much a work-in-progress. This combination school district-private investor model has never been tried before, but there are federal funding sources available to make the project very attractive to both Heston Wind, the investor, and the school districts.
