Softball gets third win on season

The Lady Rebels softball team is 3-0 after wins this past week over Knoxville and Fulton.Alex Nusz pitched all seven innings and struck out 13 batters, allowing no hits and no walks in her effort.
On offense, the team scored one run in all of the first five innings, with two in the fourth. Elizabeth Groter had two hits on four at-bats and one RBI, followed by Danielle Kenney with one hit on four at-bats with two RBIs.
Then, versus Fulton on Monday night, the team scored seven runs in a 7-2 victory.
The Lady Rebels scored two in both the second and fourth innings, and then added three more, mostly on walks.
Nusz picked up her third win on the season with four innings. She allowed one walk and two strike outs.

The Stark County softball and baseball teams both picked up season opening wins Monday night.The softball team, coached by Jarrod Hippen and Amy Wise, traveled to Bureau Valley and took an early lead in the second inning, 2-0.
In the fifth inning, now leading 3-1, Stark County got two more runs to go up 5-1.
Single runs in the seventh finished things off for both teams and gave the Lady Rebels the win, 6-2.
Mariah Kraft and Elizabeth Hippen both had two hits at three at-bats. Hippen and Danielle Kenney each had a double.
Alex Nusz pitched all seven innings for Stark County. She struck out four and walked just three. The Lady Rebels are in action again Saturday at Knoxville for a junior varsity/varsity double-header at 11 a.m.
The Rebels also took care of the Bureau Valley Storm in seven innings.
Rebels’ season ended by Orion

The Stark Co. Rebels’ season came to a close Fri. night, 2/25 in the Galva Regional championship game against the Orion Chargers, 58-43. The 1st quarter was fast paced as both teams ran up and down the court with little pause in between baskets. Stark Co. fell behind early in the contest and trailed for most of the game as Orion built up a quick lead in the opening quarter. In the final 2 minutes of the 1st period, Orion spurted out ahead of the Rebels and the quarter ended in the Chargers’ favor, 18-11.The 2nd quarter witnessed Orion outpacing the Rebels on the floor which led to numerous open shots for scores. Stark Co., playing a slightly slower game, was able to stay with the Chargers on the scoreboard, but gave up too many turnovers. This kept the Rebels from closing in on the Orion squad. The half ended with Orion ahead by 9 points, 33-24.
Lady Rebels’ season comes to a close

The Stark County Lady Rebels played against the Colfax-Ridgeview Mustangs Mon. 2/21 at Illinois Wesleyan Univ. in Bloomington for the State super-sectional title and came up just short by a score of 48-45. With a little more time, the result would have been reversed as the Rebels had battled back from a 7 point deficit at the beginning of the 4th quarter to close within 1 point, 46-45 with 27.1 seconds remaining.The 1st quarter began with the 2 teams trading the lead 3 times until Colfax-Ridgeview built a 5 point lead 13-8 at 2:46 left in the opening period. Stark Co. trailed at the close of the quarter by that margin with the score 16-11.
In the 2nd quarter, the Lady Rebels quickly fell behind by 12 points at 6:08 and Coach Paxson called a timeout to regroup his team. During this period, the Lady Rebels were turning the ball over and not rebounding offensively which resulted in them going down by 14 points mid-way through the quarter. Stark Co. began a comeback in the final minute of the half, but remained down by 6 points as it ended, 27-21.

At GALVA: Stark Co. traveled to Galva Tues. night, 2/8 for a conference game against the Wildcats and came away with their 6th win, 68-52, without defeat to lead the Lincoln Trail Conference. The Rebels’ season record improves to 17-5, as a result.
In the 1st quarter, the Rebels’ defense smothered Galva’s offense and kept them from scoring until a free throw was made at 4:25. The score was 9-1 at that juncture. The 1st quarter closed with the Rebel lead at 12-6.
For the 2nd quarter, the Rebel’s 2-3 zone defense clamped off the Wildcat’s scoring and held them to a mere 4 points, while amassing 21 of their own. The score at the half was 33-10.
