Leslie G. Oney Sr., 74 of Hillsdale formerly of Wyoming, IL died Saturday, August 1, 2009 at home. Services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday at the Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be in Bethesda Cemetery, Hillsdale. Visitation was on Tuesday from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM with a Masonic service at 5:00 PM at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established. There was a lunch following the services at the Hillsdale United Methodist Church.
Mr. Oney was born April 7, 1935 in Wyoming, IL, the son of Wickliffe and Charlotte Elkins Oney. He married Evelyn Wilson on December 18, 1955 in Princeville, IL. Les served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959. He owned and operated his own trucking company. He then owned and operated Les’s Service in Hillsdale for 20 years. He most recently was a driver for Larry Lievens Trucking, Hillsdale. Les was a 32nd degree Mason being a member of the Stewart Masonic Lodge #92, Geneseo. He had previously been a member of the Philo Masonic Lodge, Port Byron. He served on the Hillsdale Fire Department for 25 years. He had also been a member of the Hillsdale Police Department. He enjoyed playing golf and reading, but most of all enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, a daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Doug Sullivan, Geneseo, sons and daughters-in-law, Leslie Jr. and Sherri Oney, Silvis, Wayne and Laura Oney, Newcastle, WY and Jim and Sue Oney, Port Byron, 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and a sister, Dorothy Putnam, Springfield, IL. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laurie in 2001, a sister, Vera and brothers, Ty and Cliff.
