Toulon – John A. Immel, 90, of Toulon, Illinois, formerly of Peoria, Illinois, died at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2011, at the Toulon Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, where he had been a resident since August of 2008.
John was born on March 10, 1921, in Washburn, Illinois, the son of Lester and Rheta Kerker Immel. He married “Gally” Marian G. Galbraith on June 5, 1943, in Chico, California. She preceded John in death on June 6, 2009, in Kewanee. Also preceding him in death was his oldest son, EJ, two brothers, and one sister.
Surviving is a daughter, Virginia (Gary) Forlines of Toulon; two sons, Richard (Chris) Immel of Denver, Colorado, and Peter (Renee) Immel of Chandler, Arizona; and four grandsons.
John was a WWII US Army Air Corps veteran, serving as a B-17 lead bomber pilot. After the war he went to work for Caterpillar, retiring as a Staff Engineer. Upon retirement he took up farming, helping his son-in-law on the family farm near Toulon.
He was a lifelong member of the IVY Club of Peoria, and loved skiing, playing tennis and golf. John and Gally loved traveling in their motor home and wintering in Venice, Florida. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, Peoria.
Cremation has been accorded and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
