LaFayette fails quorum for second month

For the second consecutive month, the Village of LaFayette has failed to muster a quorum of trustees at the regularly scheduled monthly board meeting. Over the past year, this has become a frequent occurrence.

Absent from Monday’s meeting were Larry Townsend, Clarence Wagher and Chris Smith. Trustees present were Bethany Peterson, Vicki McRell and Rick Shipman.

Ordinances were to be passed in December, 2017, one with a January 15 deadline attached, but this could not be accomplished. Therefore, Village President Greg Bartley called for a special meeting to be held this Thursday, January 11 at 5:30 p.m. for the purpose of passing the ordinances.

The ordinance deals with sexual harassment, which all governmental bodies in Illinois are mandated to pass by January 15, 2018.

The other ordinance is connected to an Ameren-Illinois change of service contract and the associated charges with natural gas supply. Ameren had a 50 year contract with the Village in which natural gas would not be charged to residents. That expires this year and now citizens of LaFayette will see natural gas charged on their bill invoices.

Other agenda items not able to be acted upon were: A donation for the LaFayette Fire Department’s “Santa’s breakfast”, park equipment, nuisance ordinance violators, water bill increase and unlicensed vehicles.
