On Saturday morning, March 3, at 6 a.m., the Stark County Junior High Science Olympiad team departed the school to travel to the WIU Macomb campus to compete in the regional tournament. After preparing for the various 23 events since October, the 12 team members were eager for the competition. Following the opening exercises, competition began at 9 a.m. The academic events are scheduled for an hour of testing for each event with the build events being self-scheduled throughout the day. This format allows the 12 team members to compete in multiple disciplines. Most events allow a team of two members to compete.
The awards ceremony began at 4 p.m. and medals were awarded to the top four scorers in each of the 23 events. Following the medal presentation came the ranking of the competing schools to determine the three which would move on to the state finals contest held at the University of Illinois campus in Urbana/Champaign on April 21. By a single point, the Stark County team was able to move on as one of the three teams representing the WIU regional. Following are the medal events of the Stark County team members.
