Possible solution for fine arts classes at JH presented

After hearing from several parents and receiving petitions from students, the Stark County CUSD #100 school board held an education committee meeting earlier this month to discuss the fine arts offerings for junior high students.

As reported after last month’s meeting, the district was proposing a plan that would limit junior high students to choosing two of the three fine arts offered – band, chorus and art. This was due to a number of factors including classroom sizes, teacher availability, and wanting to maintain student interaction time for band and/or chorus events. At the committee meeting on April 5, the idea of offering a special class for students who wished to take all three was stated as a possible option to explore.

Principal Bill Lamb reported at Monday night’s monthly school board meeting that surveys were distributed and 17 of the 23 surveys returned stated they would be interested in the special art class which could be held one day a week for the school year during 8th hour.

The district has two choices if they implement that option. Choice one would pay an overload fee to a teacher willing to teach that hour. The current junior high and elementary school shared art teacher, Ms. Stahl, who is unavailable at that time due to her schedule at the elementary school.

The cost for an overload is $1,756 per class per year (three classes may be needed, one for each grade, for one day per week). In an overload situation the district cannot force a teacher to take on the additional workload, they must be willing, according to Superintendent Jerry Klooster.

The other option is to reduce the course offerings at the high school to allow the high school art teacher Lisa Jacobs to teach the class without an overload situation. Mr. Lamb reported he was unable to speak with Mrs. Jacobs for a definite answer prior to the meeting Monday night. The board tabled the matter to the May meeting when more survey results may be available and answers about overload would be known.

At a building committee meeting earlier in the evening on Monday the issue of the gym floor was discussed. Superintendent Klooster stated the cracks have not improved yet and there are some significant gaps on the south and southeast corner of the gym.


Instead of purchasing a protective tarp, which would cost $8,000, the installation company ProStar recommended sealing the floor twice over the summer and double applications over the next several years. The cost per sealing is expected to be about $700.

Tarps were removed prior to the recent high school musical and will not be used at graduation, according to Klooster.

The building committee also discussed the shed that has already been approved to be installed at the football field as part of the Athletic Facility Fundraiser projects.

Lance Gentle on behalf of American Steel Carports updated the committee with a new quote, which included a recent increase on the price of steel due to tariffs.

The price of $7,660 includes installation of a 24’x31’ shed with an 8’x7’ roll up door, one walk in door, and one window. The building would have a 90 mph wind warranty and a 20 year rust warranty. American Steel Carports are built in Kewanee and Gentle said he would donate his sales commission, 10% back to the district.
The only item still to be determined by the school board is whether or not to pour a concrete pad for the shed flooring or to just spread gravel. Quotes for a concrete pad will be sought for the next meeting.

Finally, the board approved a 30 cent per hour rate increase for all non-certified staff; the employment of Jay Melton as assistant principal for the 2018-2019 year, Dale Heinold for a three year contract as IT coordinator, Morgan Coats as custodian at the junior high, and Tim Colgan as volunteer mower; and accepted the resignation/retirement of transportation director Don Turnbull effective at the end of the current school year.
