When Jim Nowlan learned that ProPublica and the Free Street Theater, both of Chicago, wanted to help communities across Illinois, he immediately nominated Stark County to be part of the activity.

As a result, artists from the community-engaged theater troupe Free Street Theater are coming to the News Room Bistro on Thursday, June 7 at 5:30 p.m. to lead a discussion with local residents about “The Survival of Our Small Towns.”

Jim is seeking volunteers with ideas about how to strengthen our small towns to participate.

The discussion will last from 5:30 until about 7:30, following which Jim Nowlan and Sara Ivey will host all those who can stay for pizza, salad and refreshments, and an opportunity to get to know the actors who will lead the discussion.

ProPublica is a nonprofit investigative news organization, based in New York City, with a major operation in Chicago as well.

Free Street Theater gives free or pay-what-you-can performances focused on contemporary social themes that are meant to bring together different ages, races and socio-economic groups.

Free Street has performed all across Chicago and toured both nationally and internationally.

The two organizations received a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council to lead constructive discussions of important challenges facing varied communities across Illinois.

Free Street Theater actors are doing research into topics to be discussed, and they are confident they can contribute to creative thinking about issues such as the survival of small rural towns.
