James Manley Smith

WEST BRANCH – James “Jim” Manley Smith, 77, of West Branch passed away Jan. 7, 2019, at Solon Care Center surrounded by his loving family.
A memorial service was held at 12 p.m. on Jan. 11, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where family greeted friends from 10 am to 12 pm prior to the service. The family invited everyone to a luncheon at The Kirkwood Room following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice, America Parkinson Disease Association, or West Branch First Responders.
James Manley Smith was born Feb., 1941 in Kewanee, Ill., to Paul and Jessie (Himes) Smith. He graduated from Toulon High School before serving in the United States Army, where he was honorably discharged as PVT.
Jim fell in love and on Jan. 29, 1972, he married Judy Hamilton in Rock Island, Ill. The couple settled in West Branch in 1974, where they raised their children, Kurt and JJ Smith.
Jim worked as an insulator for various companies, becoming a Business Manager at one time. He retired in 1996, after 25 years as an insulator. He also was a member of the CAVE (Citizens Against Virtually Everything) Coffee Club and Local 81 Heat & Frost Insulators, a labor union based in Cedar Rapids.
He was a Chicago Cubs and Bears fan and loved to cheer them on. He also loved gambling, especially if it was blackjack. Above all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his wife, Judy of West Branch; children, Kurt Smith and JJ (Julie) Smith, both of West Branch; brother, Roger (Alice) Smith of Phoenix, Ariz., and grandchildren, Maycee, Sadie and McGavin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Jessie Smith.
