TOULON – A Celebration of Life service is being held for Alexis Schmidt at the First Baptist Church of Toulon Saturday, July 6, at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Al Harmon is officiating.

After the service her ashes will be buried at Evergreen Memorial Gardens south of Kewanee. Calling hours at Haskell Funeral Home in Toulon are Friday, July 5, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Alexis Joy Schmidt was born Jul. 22, 1946, in Kewanee, Ill., the daughter of Roy and Dorothy Appenheimer Schmidt. She passed away Dec. 29, 2018, in Bensenville, Ill., at the age of 72 years.

Alexis grew up in Toulon and graduated from Toulon Township High School with the Class of 1964. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and taught in elementary schools in Phoenix, Ariz., Reykjavik, Iceland, Concord, N.H., Merrill, Mich., and Belvidere, Ill. After retirement Alexis lived in Toulon and in Northlake, Ill.

Alexis married Andrew Costello March 17, 1978, in Midland, Mich. To them were born two daughters, Shannon Raye and Erin Britt Costello. In 1986 Alexis and Andrew divorced. Alexis raised Shannon and Erin as a single mother and was proud of their accomplishments as young professional women and mothers.

Alexis had many interests. She loved children and delighted in helping others. One of her major joys was helping Shannon and Erin plan their weddings.

Alexis is survived by her mother, Dorothy Schmidt of Kewanee; two daughters, Shannon Costello and her husband Tom Altman of Fairfax, Va., and Erin (Tom) Rybarczyk, of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandchildren, Arden Altman and Theodore Rybarczyk; two brothers, Ron (Margaret) Schmidt of McKinney, Texas, and Don (Bonnie) Schmidt of Toulon; nieces Susan (Mike) Gordon of Arlington Heights, Ill., Rebecca Adair of Toulon, nephew Eric Schmidt of McKinney, Texas, four aunts, Juanita Murray of Bloomington, Ind., Kate Kerr, Tallahassee, Fla., Rose Appenheimer, Dixon, Ill., and Glenna Omanson, Aurora, Ill.; and many Appenheimer, Schmidt and Swango cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father.
