Lynda Holman, daughter of Del and Joanne Holman, of Bradford, Illinois, has recently been afflicted with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) since mid-2014.
The benefit will help pay a portion of Lynda’s expenses in dealing with this incurable disease. She currently requires 24-hour care at home and needs equipment, transportation and home modifications.
Those modifications include a ramp for access to her home, bathroom accessibility, a power lift and a power wheelchair, augmentative communication device and a wheelchair accessible van.
ALS is a progressive disease of the nervous system that controls voluntary muscle movement. It causes weakness of muscles, difficulty in speaking, swallowing and will eventually become a complete paralysis of the body.
Lynda’s left hand became weak in May, 2014, plus other symptoms that followed. She was diagnosed with ALS in late August, that year. Lynda’s independence and ability to live alone has now become impossible.
Lynda graduated from Bradford High School in 1983 and from Indiana University-Purdue University, located in Indianapolis, in 1987. She pursued a career in occupational therapy working nearly three decades for the Champaign Unit Four School District.
There, Lynda was an occupational therapist and later a member of the District Autism team, dedicating her life to working with families and children with disabilities.
Now, Lynda needs assistance with her disability. The Holman’s are asking the public to be part of the ALS awareness Ice Bucket Challenge Fundraiser Event, October 11, 2-4 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn-East Parking Lot located at 1501 S. Neil Street, Champaign, Illinois.
All cash donations and walk-ins are welcome. Please, make your checks to Lynda Holman. These are considered a tax deductible medical expense fund.
Any questions about the event, email [email protected] or if unable to attend, but would like to donate, please send your check made out to Linda Holman to Central Illinois Bank, 302 W. Springfield Avenue, Champaign, Illinois, 61820.
