Sheriff reminds motorist to ‘move over’

After several close calls, Stark County Sheriff Jimmie Dison would like to remind motorists of the law when approaching emergency scenes to keep both the emergency workers and citizens safe from further harm by passing cars.

Scott’s Law is the “move over” law that mandates any vehicle approaching an emergency vehicle stopped along the roadway must reduce speed, change lanes if possible, and proceed with due caution.

An emergency vehicle includes any authorized apparatus with rotating  flashing lights, including fire trucks, ambulances, I.D.O.T., and tow trucks.

Scott’s Law was named after Lieutenant Scott Gillen of the Chicago Fire Department who was struck and killed by an intoxicated driver while assisting at a crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway.
